Privacy Policy
Phoenix Dawn Studios is building its first app: an anime alarm app for iPhone and Android, coming soon. We designed it so your information stays on your phone. This policy explains what that means in plain English: what the app stores, what it asks permission for, what happens when you buy something, and what this website does (and doesn't) do.
At a glance
- No accounts. You never create an account or sign in to use our app.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking. Our app contains no advertising, analytics, or tracking tools, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- Your stuff stays on your device. Your alarms, character lineup, and settings are stored on your phone. We don't run servers that collect them, and we can't see them.
- Apple or Google handle payments. We never see your card or bank details.
- We don't sell your information, and we don't share it for advertising.
- This website uses no cookies and no analytics.
1. Who we are
"Phoenix Dawn Studios," "we," "us," and "our" mean Phoenix Dawn Studios LLC, a Michigan limited liability company in the United States. We develop our anime alarm app (its final name will be announced at launch) and operate this website, phoenixdawnstudios.com.
This policy covers:
- our mobile apps that link to this policy, including our alarm app;
- this website; and
- emails you send us.
It doesn't cover services run by other companies, such as Apple's App Store, Google Play, iCloud, or your Google account. Those companies have their own privacy policies.
Questions about privacy? Email us at hello@phoenixdawnstudios.com.
2. What information is involved
We built the app to collect as little as possible. Most of the time, we collect nothing at all. Here is every kind of information involved, where it's kept, and whether we can see it.
| Information | Where it's kept | Can we see it? |
|---|---|---|
| Your alarms (times, repeat days, labels, snooze settings) | On your device | No |
| Your weekly character lineup and app preferences | On your device | No |
| Characters and songs you've unlocked, and how you've used tickets (once purchases launch) | On your device, plus an optional backup in your own iCloud or Google account | No |
| Payment card and bank details | Apple or Google | No, never |
| Purchase records (product, price, date, order or transaction number) | Apple or Google, and a purchase-management service if we use one | Limited transaction details, used for accounting, refunds, and support |
| Crash reports (only if you opt in through your device settings) | Apple or Google | De-identified technical reports only |
| Emails you send us | Our domain registrar (forwarding) and email provider | Yes, so we can reply |
| Standard website server logs | Our website host, GitHub | No. GitHub keeps them for security; we don't receive them. |
3. Information stored on your device
To work, the app saves the following in its private storage on your phone:
- Your alarms: times, repeat days, any labels you type, whether each alarm is on, and snooze settings.
- Your weekly lineup: which character wakes you up on each day of the week.
- Your preferences, such as which character appears on the home screen and whether background music is on.
- Small bits of app memory, such as whether you've seen the welcome screen and which wake-up clip played last, so clips can take turns.
- Once in-app purchases launch: the characters and songs you've unlocked, and how you've used any tickets.
This information stays on your device. The app doesn't send it to us, and we have no way to see it. Your device's own security (your passcode and the operating system's built-in protections) keeps it safe. The character artwork, voice clips, and music come built into the app, so playing them sends nothing to us.
4. Permissions the app asks for
The app asks only for the permissions an alarm clock needs. You can change them at any time in your device's Settings. If you turn one off, your alarms may not ring or appear the way they should.
| Permission | Platform | Why we ask |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications | iPhone and Android | To alert you when an alarm goes off or a snooze ends. These are local notifications scheduled on your device. The app doesn't sign up for push notifications from a server. Alarm labels you type appear in these notifications, which can show on your lock screen. |
| Alarms (planned) | iPhone, on supported iOS versions | To schedule alarms through the iPhone's built-in alarm system (AlarmKit), so they ring like the Clock app's alarms, even in Silent mode or a Focus. |
| Alarms & reminders (exact alarms) | Android | So your alarm rings at the exact minute you set. |
| Full-screen notifications | Android | So the wake-up screen can appear over your lock screen when an alarm rings. |
| Vibration and keep awake | Android | To vibrate and keep your phone awake long enough to play your alarm. Android grants these automatically when you install the app. |
| Run at startup | Android | So your alarms are set again after your phone restarts. Android grants this automatically. |
| Network access | Android | Only for the online features described in When the app goes online, such as buying and restoring purchases. Alarms don't need the internet. Android grants this automatically. |
What the app does not ask for: your camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, calendar, or health data, or permission to track you (App Tracking Transparency). The app doesn't access any of these.
5. When the app goes online
Your alarms are scheduled on your device. They don't need an internet connection or any server of ours to ring, and we don't run app servers that collect your information.
The app goes online only for specific features, such as buying or restoring purchases and, if we offer it, downloading extra content you've unlocked. Any internet connection shares some basic information. The services involved (for example Apple, Google, a purchase-management service, or a content-delivery host) receive your device's IP address and the basic technical details needed to answer the request. We don't use this information to identify you or build a profile of you.
6. In-app purchases
We plan to offer optional in-app purchases, such as tickets to draw new characters, or songs. You'll make every purchase through the Apple App Store or Google Play, using your Apple Account or Google account.
- Apple or Google process your payment. We never receive your card number or bank details.
- Sales reports. Apple and Google send developers sales and financial reports. These can include order numbers, the product bought, the price, the date, and the general location of the purchase (such as country or region and, in some reports, state or postal code). We use these reports only for accounting, taxes, refunds, and customer support.
- Your purchase history is kept by Apple or Google under their privacy policies. That history is what lets you restore eligible purchases on a new device.
Purchase-management service
We may use a purchase-management service, such as RevenueCat, to check that purchases are valid and to restore them on your devices. If we do, the app would send that service:
- a random, anonymous app user ID created by the app. This is not your name, email address, or advertising ID;
- the purchase receipts and transaction details provided by Apple or Google, such as the product, price, currency, date, and store transaction ID; and
- basic technical information needed to process the request, such as app version, operating system, store country, and your IP address, which any internet connection shares.
We would use this only to confirm that purchases are genuine, deliver what you bought, restore purchases, handle refunds, and keep sales records. We would not use it for advertising or tracking. We would only use a service that is required by contract to protect this information and to use it only to provide its service to us. If we use RevenueCat, you can read its privacy policy at revenuecat.com/privacy.
7. Backups and syncing
We don't back up your data to our own servers. Two kinds of backup may happen. Both are stored in your own account, and your device settings control them.
- Your device's regular backups. On iPhone, iCloud Backup or a computer backup may include the app's data along with your other apps. On Android, backup to your Google account may do the same. Whether this happens depends on your settings. Apple or Google manage these backups, and we can't access them.
- Purchase ledger (planned). If you reinstall the app or switch phones, the app needs to remember which of your tickets you've already spent and which characters you drew with them. To do that, the app may keep a small record of how you've used your tickets. On Apple devices, this record would be kept in your own iCloud storage (iCloud key-value storage). On Android, it would be kept by Android's backup service in your Google account. The record contains no name, email address, or contact details, and it is never sent to us. Deleting the app doesn't remove it; see How to delete your data.
You can turn off iCloud for the app, or turn off backup on Android, in your device's settings. Apple and Google describe how they handle backups in their privacy policies: Apple Privacy Policy and Google Privacy Policy.
8. Crash reports from Apple and Google
The app has no crash-reporting or analytics tools of its own. However, if you've chosen in your device settings to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple or Google may give us crash reports and app performance statistics. These reports are de-identified. They typically include things like device model, operating system version, and technical details about the crash, but not your name or contact details. We use them only to find and fix bugs. You can turn this sharing off in your device's privacy settings.
9. This website
phoenixdawnstudios.com is a simple, static website.
- No cookies, no tracking. We don't set cookies or use tracking technologies such as tracking pixels or browser fingerprinting. The site follows your device's light or dark setting automatically and stores nothing in your browser.
- No analytics or ads. The site has no analytics, advertising, or social-media tracking.
- Server logs. Our site is hosted on GitHub Pages, run by GitHub, Inc. Like nearly every web host, GitHub automatically records standard technical information when you visit, including your IP address, for security, under the GitHub General Privacy Statement. We don't receive these logs and don't use them to identify or track visitors.
- Links. This site links to other companies' websites, such as Apple and Google. Their own privacy policies apply when you visit them.
10. When you email us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if your email shows it, and whatever you write or attach. We use this only to reply, give support, and keep ordinary business records. Email sent to our address is forwarded by our domain registrar (Porkbun) to a mailbox we keep with an email provider (currently Google Gmail), which stores the messages for us. We won't add you to a mailing list unless you ask us to. Please don't send sensitive information, such as payment card numbers, by email.
11. Who we share information with
We don't sell personal information. We don't share it for targeted advertising, and we don't give it to data brokers. The only others involved are:
- Apple and Google. They run the app stores, process payments, provide backups and, if you opt in, diagnostics. They do this under their own privacy policies.
- GitHub. It hosts this website and keeps standard server logs for security under its own privacy statement. We don't receive those logs (see This website).
- Service providers that work for us: our domain registrar (which forwards our email), our email provider, and a purchase-management service if we use one. We require them to protect the information with at least the same level of protection described in this policy, and to use it only to provide their services to us.
- Legal and safety reasons. We may share information if the law requires it (for example, a valid subpoena or court order), or to protect the rights, safety, and property of our users, the public, or us, including to prevent fraud.
- Business changes. If Phoenix Dawn Studios is part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, the small amount of information we hold may be transferred. We'll require the new owner to respect this policy for that information.
12. How long we keep information
- Information on your device stays until you delete it in the app, clear the app's data, or uninstall the app. Copies may remain in your own device backups until those backups are replaced or deleted. Once purchases launch, the ticket ledger stays in your iCloud or Google account until you erase it (see How to delete your data).
- Emails are kept as long as we need them to help you and to keep ordinary business records. We generally delete them within three years of our last exchange, unless we need them longer for legal, tax, or accounting reasons.
- Purchase records held by a purchase-management service (if we use one) are kept as long as needed to provide and restore your purchases and to meet tax and accounting obligations. After that, they are deleted or de-identified.
- Website server logs are kept by GitHub under its own privacy statement. We don't receive or keep copies.
13. Children
Our alarm app is intended for adults 18 and older, as our Terms of Use require, and will carry a mature age rating in the app stores. Neither the app nor this website is directed to children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, or under the minimum age set by the law where they live. The app has no accounts and is designed to keep its data on the device. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, for example by email, contact us and we'll delete it.
14. Your choices and rights
How to delete your data
- In the app: you can delete alarms at any time.
- Everything the app stores on your device: on iPhone, delete the app. ("Offload App" keeps your data, so choose "Delete App" to remove it.) On Android, go to Settings › Apps › our app › Storage & cache › Clear storage (on Samsung: Storage › Clear data), or uninstall the app.
- Backups: you can manage or delete device backups in your iCloud or Google account settings.
- The ticket ledger (once purchases launch): this record stays in your iCloud or Google account after you delete the app, so deleting the app alone won't remove it. The app will include an Erase all app data option in its settings that removes the ledger along with everything else the app stores. Use it before you delete the app.
- Emails and purchase records we hold: email us to ask for a copy, a correction, or deletion. We don't know who you are, so we may need a store order number or transaction ID to find purchase records. You'll find it on your Apple or Google receipt.
- Purchase history kept by Apple or Google: contact them directly. We can't change or delete their records.
Deleting app data doesn't refund purchases. Apple and Google handle refunds.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- ask what personal information we have about you;
- get a copy of it;
- correct it or delete it;
- object to or limit certain uses; and
- withdraw consent you've given.
You can withdraw a permission, or stop sharing diagnostics, at any time in your device's Settings. We hold very little, so in most cases the answer will be "nothing beyond your emails." To make a request, email hello@phoenixdawnstudios.com. We'll respond within 30 days. If we need more time, we'll tell you why. We may ask for information to confirm the request is genuine, but we won't ask for more than we need. Where the law allows, you can use an authorized agent to make a request for you. We won't treat you differently for using your rights. If we turn down your request, you can appeal by replying to our decision.
15. California and other U.S. states
This section gives the disclosures required by the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act) and similar U.S. state laws, to the extent those laws apply to us.
- Categories we may collect:
- identifiers: your email address if you contact us, and an anonymous app user ID and IP address if we use a purchase-management service; and
- commercial information: records of in-app purchases.
- Sources: you (when you email us), your device, and Apple and Google.
- Purposes: answering your messages, providing and restoring purchases, accounting, security, and legal compliance.
- Disclosed to: the service providers described in Who we share information with, for these business purposes only.
- Sale and sharing: we do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we have not done so in the past 12 months. That includes information about consumers under 16.
- Sensitive personal information: we don't collect it.
- Opt-out signals: we don't sell, share, or track, so there's nothing to opt out of. The site and app work the same whether or not your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal.
16. Users outside the United States
We are based in the United States. If you're in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, the following also applies:
- Controller: Phoenix Dawn Studios LLC is the controller of the personal information described in this policy that we handle (emails and purchase records). GitHub, Apple, and Google are responsible for their own processing.
- Legal bases:
- performing our contract with you, to deliver and restore purchases you make;
- our legitimate interests, to answer your messages, keep our app and website secure, prevent fraud, and keep business records (we weigh these interests against your rights); and
- legal obligations, such as tax and accounting rules.
- International transfers: the information we handle is processed in the United States and wherever our service providers operate. Where required, these transfers rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
- Your rights: you can ask to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our use of your personal information, and to receive it in a portable format. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority, though we'd appreciate the chance to sort things out with you first.
- No automated decisions: we don't make decisions about you based solely on automated processing or profiling.
17. Security
The best protection is not having the data in the first place. Our app keeps your information on your device, and we keep very little ourselves. For what we do hold, we use reasonable safeguards. We limit access to the people who need it, and we choose providers with strong security practices. Connections for purchases are encrypted. Your device's security protects the data the app stores, so keep a passcode on your phone and your software up to date. No way of storing or sending information is completely secure, so we can't promise absolute security.
18. Changes to this policy
We'll update this policy as our app grows, for example when we announce its final name or launch new features. When we do, we'll post the new version on this page and update the effective date at the top. Some changes are significant, for example if the app would start sending new kinds of information off your device. For those, we'll tell you clearly before the change takes effect, in the app or on this website, and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
